Duel de légende à Jeffreys Bay lors du Billabong Pro du 9 au 19 juillet ! La plus belle vague du monde départagera enfin les deux icônes du surf. L’ultime confrontation entre le champion du monde Australien Mark Occhilupo et le triple champion du monde Californien Tom Curren aura bien lieu à J-Bay.. Une rivalité qui a écrit l’une des plus belles pages du surf durant les années 80.
Égalité parfaite, chacun des deux a gagné 8 de leurs 16 dernières rencontres, et le “Clash des Légendes“ à J-Bay viendra écrire un nouveau chapitre de cette saga longue de 26 années. Durant les années 1980, aucune autre rivalité n’a été aussi suivie que celle de Tom Curren et Mark Occhilupo. Chaque fois que les surfeurs se sont rencontrés dans leurs séries, les spectateurs présents ont toujours pu assister à des confrontations à l’eau uniques et historiques.
« J’ai connu Occy avant qu’il devienne un nom reconnu. Quand il a commencé à vraiment sortir du lot, c’était à Jeffreys Bay », raconte Curren. « Il avait tant d’énergie, il plaçait chacun de ses turns avec une vitesse et une puissance impressionnantes ». « J’ai observé ses vidéos à plusieurs reprises, quand je l’ai vu la première fois je me rappelle avoir été frappé par sa capacité d’anticipation sur chaque turn, c’était quelque chose de grand, d’étonnant ! ».
« La première fois que j’ai vu Tom surfer, j’étais vraiment jeune, c’était à Cronulla (Australie), à Wanda Beach. », se souvient Occhilupo. « Un jour après l’école, je marchais sur la colline surplombant la plage, il y avait un bon 2-3 mètres et j’ai vu Tom, il était seul à l’eau ». « Si je me souviens bien, il a gagné le Beaurepaires Open à Cronulla cette année-là, et la première fois que je l’ai vu c’était sur ce pic. Incontestablement, c’était lui le boss. »
Peu importe où l’événement avait lieu ou qui y participait, il y avait toujours deux camps : la troupe d’Occy et l’équipe de Curren. C’était goofy contre regular, carves puissants contre style coulé, Australie contre Etats-Unis. Leurs plus mémorables confrontations furent certainement pendant le Rip Curl Pro Bells qui s’est conclu par le premier titre mondial de Tom en 1985, et l’OP Pro devant un public de 100 000 personnes à Huntington Beach gagné par Occy plus tard cette année-là. « Je l’ai battu à l’OP Pro à Huntington deux fois suite à une rivalité probablement née à Bells et les différentes séries disputées sur le tour mondial à cette époque », raconte Occy. « Il y avait littéralement des milliers de personnes sur la jetée qui encourageaient Tom, je devais vraiment y aller pour renverser la tendance ».
« Je me souviens qu’Occy passait tout ce qu’il voulait à chaque tour, il avait ce petit plus qui faisait la différence. », se souvient Tom Curren. « Chacun de nous donnait le meilleur de lui-même, mais il a gagné avec une dernière vague à la fin, je me souviens juste que c’était très tendu et très éprouvant. »
Curren a continué en remportant 353 séries, 33 compétitions et 3 titres mondiaux, Occy de son côté a gagné 380 séries, 12 compétitions, et 1 titre mondial.
Tous deux ont été choisis pour leur surf exceptionnel sur cette vague de J-Bay – Occy avait gagné le premier événement à J-Bay en 1984 avec une performance qui a redéfini le surf backside, ce qui l’a fait devenir l’un des fils préféré de cette Mecque du surf mondial. Les trajectoires à la Curren quant à elles, ont montré une nouvelle façon unique et novatrice de surfer “Supertubes“.
Les deux surfeurs ne se sont jamais retrouvés face à face dans une série sur cette fabuleuse vague. Le Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay 2009 va donner cette année l’opportunité à Occy d’envoyer du gros en backside et à Curren d’imposer son style fluide sur cette vague mythique.
« Si on doit se retrouver une nouvelle fois à l’eau pour cet ultime duel, il faudra qu’il y ait une grosse série, pour moi, pour Occy, pour nous deux ! », précise Curren. « Où qu’aille Occy, il a une bonne chance de gagner, contre n’importe qui et je m’inclus bien sûr dedans, ça va dépendre de l’entraînement donc je pense que si je m’entraîne dur, je pourrais peut-être le battre lors de cet événement. »
